The Speech Pathology Department at the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) is committed to teaching and supporting both speech pathology colleagues and students through education and training in paediatric speech, language and swallowing difficulties. |
Work Experience
| Due to our undergraduate commitments the RCH Speech Pathology Department is unable to offer work or casual observation experience to high school or potential mature age students interested in entering the field of speech pathology. Undergraduate Training

Australian Speech Pathologists complete a four-year undergraduate degree, which includes academic and clinical training. Speech Pathology can be studied in Victoria at La Trobe University. Regional Victorian students can also study Speech Pathology at Charles Sturt University in NSW. Other Universities that offer undergraduate degrees in Speech Pathology can be located at the Speech Pathology Australia website. The RCH Speech Pathology Department currently accepts students from La Trobe University (VIC) and Charles Sturt University (NSW). All clinical placements are organised directly through University Speech Pathology Schools. To prepare for a placement at the RCH Speech Pathology Department students are required to review and read through the following orientation pack (STUDENT_HANDBOOK (PDF 400 KB). | Philippa Hillman undertook a clinical placement at RCH and reports the following about her experiences.
"I had the opportunity to work alongside medical professionals as they cared for inspiring children, their parents and families. More than anything, this placement provided me with the opportunity to see the importance of the art and facilitation of communication in an individual's life at the most basic level." Imogen Hay reports the following about her experiences as a student clinician at RCH. "I had the opportunity to experience a specialised caseload, and gain an understanding of elements of areas within the scope of Speech Pathology practice that can only be sought from clinical experience." |
Graduate Entry Programs
| La Trobe University currently offers a two year graduate entry program where students who have previously completed an undergraduate degree can undertake a two year Masters of Speech Pathology. Post-graduate Training
| The Speech Pathology Department at the RCH run a seminar series for the profession every year on varying topics.
