How to Refer to Occupational Therapy
Inpatients
Referrals to occupational therapy are accepted from all medical and allied health staff within the hospital by filling in a red Occupational Therapy referral card and sending it to:
Occupational Therapy Department
4th floor, Main building
Outpatients
Public
Referrals to occupational therapy for outpatient services may be accepted for children who are patients of the hospital. Referrals are accepted from Royal Children's Hospital medical and allied health staff . There may be a waiting list for some services.
To refer a child for outpatient services fill in a red Occupational Therapy referral card and send to:

OT Australia(Vic) has compiled a listing of Private Occupational Therapists who provide services to children. This listing is not an endorsement in regard to the quality of service provided by these therapists.
The OT Australia Private Practice Register provides a list of private Occupational Therapists currently working in Victoria. (This link will take you to the O.T. Australia Web page, refer to the menu bar on top left of screen and select "Find an O.T." Then scroll through to paediatric heading.

Restraining Children with Disabilities in Motor Vehicles (2000)
This is a manual outlining the guidelines used by OTs at the RCH for seating children with disabilities in motor vehicles. The guidelines presented in the manual are based on the Australian Standards AS/NZ 4370: 1996 Restraint of children with disabilities in motor vehicles.
The manual covers:
- General guidelines for prescribing a restraint
- Guidelines for modifying a restraint
- Anchorage points
- A description of types of restraints appropriate for children of different ages and weights
- Example letters for use by children be restrained in modified car seats

Handwriting Assessment (2000)
The Handwriting Assessment has been developed by the O.T.s at the RCH to provide structured guidelines for clinical observation of a students handwriting. It is suitable for both primary and secondary students who have a range of difficulties and diagnoses and has a strong occupational therapy focus rather than an educational or psychological focus.
The Handwriting Assessment takes approximately 10 to 30 minutes to complete. The assessment consists of three test forms:
- client information
- clinical observational sheets (i and ii are both completed by the therapist)
- handwriting worksheets used by the student
The assessment is available to purchase from the RCH OT department.

The Melbourne Assessment
The Melbourne Assessment of Unilateral Upper Limb Function (The Melbourne Assessment) (1998)
The Melbourne Assessment is a valid and reliable test of quality of unilateral upper limb movement for children aged 5 to 15 years with neurological impairment. It is a simple, easy to administer assessment that comprises 16 items involving reach, grasp, release and manipulation.
