Search the catalogue directly from your browser

A search 'plugin' or 'provider' allows you to access a search engine or database right from your browser, without having to go to the website first.

In Firefox or Internet Explorer 7 you use the search box at the top of the browser window. If you use Internet Explorer 6 you can use an alternative method. If you use Internet Explorer 5.0 or 5.5, this won't work for you, and you might want to upgrade to a better browser.

There are hundreds of search engine plugins, including many health related such as Centers for Disease Control, Medline Plus, and Cancerweb's medical dictionary.

Search plugins are the quickest way to search, so we have created two for the library catalogue. Choose to search by title or author, or both.

For Firefox 2+

The Firefox search bar

Your browser already knows there are plugins available on this page, and the search box should be highlighted in blue.

Open the search box by clicking the arrow next to the current search icon, then select Add "RCH Library catalogue title search" and Add "RCH Library catalogue author search".

Use the Manage Search Engines selection to add, remove or move search plugins.

For Firefox 1.5

If you want to uninstall a plugin, use an uninstall extension or remove it manually.

Manual removal of Firefox search plugins:

  1. Go to your installation directory (not your profile directory) and find the subdirectory searchplugins
  2. Delete both .SRC and .PNG files for each search plugin you wish to remove. For example, to remove the library catalogue "search by title" plugin, delete "rchLibT.src" and "rchLibT.png"
  3. Restart Firefox and the deleted plugins will be removed.

For Internet Explorer 7

You can install our custom catalogue searches in IE7 and above. Microsoft call them search providers.

For Internet Explorer 6

This useful tool can be implemented in IE6 only by tweaking your computer's operating system.

If you you would like to have this tool enabled, contact Vicki in the library on x7010 or email rch.library@rch.org.au.

Why so plain?

This site is styled using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). If you can read this message, either you have disabled styles yourself, your browser does not support CSS sufficiently well to be served up the styles, or you are viewing this on a mobile device. Everything here is still readable and usable, it's just not so pretty :)

These pages have been crafted for printing, so appear different from what you see on screen.
